From donor's larger slide collection has file number "10868" printed on it; inscription on mount identifies as S.W. corner Shelbyville Public Square as found in 1902 Picturesque Shelbyville.
This photograph was likely taken soon after The Shelbyville Electric Street Railway, Heat, Light and Power Company installed tracks for the interurban through Public square in 1902. The rail line provided hourly train service to Indianapolis and surrounding communities. The businesses featured ( from L to R) in this photograph include Silas Pitman's Cigars & Confections, John Shelk Boots & Shoes and Flora Davis Clothing & Dry Goods Store. The next building, called The Cheney Building, was built in 1901 and contained A.L. Sparks Confectioner, Joe Hine Tailor, J. W. Worden Harness Shop and Doran & Means Soda Fountain.
Next to The Cheney Building, the Knights of Pythias built Castle Hall in February of the same year, replacing the livery stable. The new buildings replaced the last of the frame structures on the quadrant. In 1902, the O.L. Means Department & Grocery store opened on the first floor of Castle Hall. Next to the department store stood The Star Store, John Horst Boots & Shoes, and the First National Bank.
