Name/Title
Scale, BalanceDescription
A device for measuring weight. First used by the Romans. Consists of a metal rod which is stamped in graduated nuimbers. There are two hooks on the rod which are off center. The hook on top was to hang up the scale. The hook on bottom was for suspending the object to be weighed. A weight was moved along the graduations until the arm balanced and gave the weight. The metal rod is curved on one end and tapered on the other. The tapered end has one hole punched in it. Unsure of correct name. In dictionary refered to as steel yard, but in Antiques, by Lar Holthem: Books Americans, Florence, Alabama, 1981 referred to as stillyards, p. 328. Also heard it called stillard.
