A cylindrical tube-like device. There are 3 cylinders to this device. 1st cylinder is solid has a graduated scale marked on it and appears to have been brass plated at one time. 2nd cylinder fits over the first and is made of bright steel and has a grooved ring near its bottom. 3rd cylinder fits over the other two and also made of bright steel. This section has maker's mark and on the side opposite the mark is "NOT/LEGAL/FOR/USE/IN/TRADE". There is a hook attached to the 1st and 3rd sections; one side of tube is marked with a diamond which has a "C" inside it; above the diamond is "PAT" and below the diamond is "FEBRUARY 13, 1912". This item was a portable scale for weighing newborns in home deliveries; baby was placed in a cloth sling and the 4 corners knotted and slipped over the hook on the graduated section, doctor held other hook in hand, let baby's weight pull scale down.
