Scope and Content

Letter from the International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House, 900 East Avenue, Rochester, N. Y. 14607. "To the Director: The International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House, with generous support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, is creating a biographical reference source of photographers. Documentation for over 5,000 photographers represented in the museum's collection is the goal for the first year of this ongoing project. Using a computer as a storage and indexing facility, data will be gathered for this file in part from sources available at Eastman House. Individual entries will include name, life dates, place of birth and death and relevant bibliographic information. This research will culminate in a publication indexed by photographer, place of birth and place active. We are writing to introduce this project to you and to ask for assistance. Much of the collection consists of 19th and early 20th century studio photographers about whom little is known. However, thanks to the practice of indicating the studio's location on the photograph, we have a starting point for inquiry. Thereby, we have compiled a list of photographers who worked in your region. Our hope is that through resources available uniquely to you--city directories, obituaries and clippings from local newspapers, and genealogy divisions of area libraries--that any information about the careers and lives of these photographers might be shared with us. We realize the demands of our request and will be most grateful for any assistance. All information will be deeply appreciated by us as well as by future researchers and, of course, will be fully credited and acknowledged. Any suggestions of others who might be able to help or who might have access to information, such as relatives of the photographers of local historians, would be invaluable. With much thanks for any assistance you might provide, I am, Respectfully yours, Susan Dodge Peters, Biographical Project Editor."
