05/14/19 - dog tag belonging to Rual "Roy" Ortiz. Ray Ortiz was just 18 when he was drafted for WWII. After the war, he returned to his home in Texas but reenlisted after the U.S. entered the Korean War. He served in the Army's 32nd Infantry Regiment until 1953. In 1959, Ortiz moved to Shelby County where he worked at the E.G. Reese Canning Company until it closed in 1962. He was then hired on at Cunningham Gardens where he worked for the next 22 years.
In an article written by LuAnn Mason that appeared in The Shelbyville News on April 18, 2003, Ortiz recounted some of his memories from his time in the service. In particular, "In Korea, we were on patrol one time, 48 of us. Ill never forget that. We were attacked by the North Koreans. We were on a trench on a hill. Only eight servived that attack. I was lucky to be one," Ortix said. "The most important man, the radio man, was dead. We were left with no communications. The high-ranking officials were dead. Corporals were wounded. I took over duties since I was the next in command. I delegated what to do for the eight of us. We were in enemy territory. I sent a soldier back over the hill one mile to get help."Collection
