The 197 Type Switch (telephone stwitch) was first developed by the Automatic Electric Co. Later rights to the equipment were acquired by the western Electric Co., a division of At&T. This type of telephone service was called a "Step by Step Dial Office." During Oct. 1955 this 'Step by Step' system was put in service at 105 West Broadway in Shelbyville, Indiana. It continued to serve Shelbyville until 1985, when it was replaced by the No.5 Electronic Switching System.
Unit uses 48V battery and works. This type model was used in Shelbyville, Indiana at the Indiana Bell office, located at 105 W. Broadway St.Collection
