Description

"Paisley" type long wool shawl with dark background; black or dark green in center; deep designs on both ends & narrower designs on sides; 1.5" borders of forals with scalloped effect on each end; deep designs are crimson, pale blue, pale green, beige, gold & brown; design consists of scrolls & swirls with painted motifs at top & sides of designs merging into plain center; on the back the colored designs are "uncropped" with woven threads carried across the back; center is woven treads-plain; black fringe on ends.

Context

Shawls were worn as cloaks for ladies; woven on large looms for domestic trade in France, England & Scotland.
