Description

Black satin fitted jacket with stand-up collar; bottom edge flaired to fit over hips; closed in front with 13 black jet buttons with flower design carved on one side of button top; back has 6 pieces; front is one piece with 2 darts to shape waistline; body of jacket is lined with brown cotton twill; bottom hem is faced with bias strip of black wool 1.5" wide; sleeves are in two pieces; bottom edge curved up to side seam; lower edge of sleeve faced with 1.25" wide black satin; sleeve lined with dark brown cotton.

Use

by Mary Crafton Deiwert (1863-1929), the donor's mother, in the 1890s.

Context

The donor referred to the blouse as a "basque."
