by Ann Woodsmansee Schulz, during the 1963 May Festival.Context
From the May Festival exhibition guide:
Of her experience, Ann wrote, "The night of the May Festival, Peggy Vaught and I got dressed at her house which was near the gym. Nancy Scott and Mary Jane Dennis also got dressed at someone's home who lived near the gym. We covered our dresses with sheets while we walked to the gym with our families. Getting into a car with those hoop skirts was a challenge but some of the girls did. After the festival, the May Court went to Ann Schoelch's house for a little party with punch and treats. During the party, Ann's dad, John, who owned Hub Shoe Store, filmed each couple walking down the stairs with his movie camera. The next night was a dance for the whole school and we wore our dresses." Ann also shared that, after the dance, the court participated in a progressive dinner much like many other courts did in the 1960s. To add to their all-night progressive dinner, the court went to Chafee's Photography Studio to see the May Festival pictures displayed in the studio windows.
A funny memory of the event was shared by another member of that year's court. When the principal, Mr. Sharp, told Gloria Spurling that she was the queen, he offered her smelling salts due to her shock in being voted queen.Category
