"Gulfport's only Queen Anne style home, at 2701 Beach Blvd S, was built around 1910 by Vincent Leonardy for the Sackrider family, and later given to their daughter Kate and her husband John F. Cronkhite, mayor during the mid-1920s. The Cronkhite's son, John L. Cronkhite, Sr., was a WWII flying ace, whose exploits inspired the 1940s hit song "Comin' in on a Wing and a Prayer."
"...a house we rented the first floor of in 1931-32, 2701 Beach Blvd. Originally we had rented the rear bungalow but my Grandmother couldn't stand the rattle snakes coming close from the banana trees to the West so when the front house became vacant we moved in. It seems to me someone in Sackrider family lived on the 2nd floor. I was at St. Petersburg High those years and didn't really pay too much attention to who was who." (C.W. Stoddard letter to Frances Purdy, excerpt in Gulfport Historian, January 1993)Collection
