The Famous Kapok Tree
located at the Kapok Tree Grove on North Haines Road in Clearwater, Florida, is a native of India. The seed was planted by Robert Hoyt in 1888 and placed in a slat roof nursery house. Later the house was removed, but the Tree was left standing in its present location. It is a male tree and has never borne seed pods. Many attempts have been made to propagate it, but none succeeded. The Tree is approximately 125 feet high, 43 feet in circumference 20 inches above the ground and has a limb spread of about 150 feet. It blooms in January and February and produces large flame colored blossoms which make the Tree look like a big ball of fire that can be seen for many miles. The blossoms have five thick velvety petals held in a heavy cup-like pod that grows close to the branch. When the Tree sheds its bloom the blossoms break off at the pod so there are no stems and they fall with a thud.
When the Tree was very young, Mr. Hoyt erected a post office on his property for the benefit of the community. The post office was discontinued many years ago and the building stood vacant. Summer Covey, the present owner, tore down the old post office and used the lumber to erect the new building south of the Tree, where this card purchased.Transcriber
