Each Sunday morning for the past two years, Leon Miami, 2340 64th St. N., has left home an hour and a half before mass begins at Holy Name Catholic Church in Gulfport. During the next 90 minutes, he criss-crosses the southern section of the city picking up parishioners in the church's school bus.
"These people couldn't get to mass any other way," he explains. "Some of them have infirmities, others are elderly and have no other transportation."
The service was started by the church's pastor, the Rev. Frank Goodman. "The regular driver went on vacation," says Miami, "and I was asked to fill in. I'm still filling in. You can't imagine the satisfaction from being able to help out this way."
The 37-year-old father of five says he carrie ssome 30 passengers in summer, 45 in winter. "But there's always room for one more if they're in the Gulfport parish. All you have to do is call Holy Name rectory."
