"Gulfport pier in 1938, the third pier to be built at the foot of 54th street. The first was a wooden pier built in 1907 by E.E. Wintersgill, who was elected the first mayor of Gulfport after its incorporation as a town in 1910. The first public pier, also of wood, excited from 1918 to 1933. This steel and concrete pier was built in 1934-1935 as a WPA project and remained until demolished in 1982. The photo looks west past the Casino and Gulfport Beach to the area that is now Town Shores and the Pasadena Yacht and Country Club. This view, taken by photographer Harry Thorne, was made into a black and white postcard."
