Project Summary Osgood Point was formed over the years by the deposition of dredge spoil material and construction debris into Clam Bayou. The site has housed a variety of activities, including local commercial fisherman and the Osgood family boat building business. In recent years the property was being used by a limited number of residents and offered very little habitat to wildlife in the area. In 1988 the City of Gulfport began preliminary measures to improve the condition of Osgood Point by removing exotic vegetation and installing a fence to control vehicle access to the site. Over the past two years, the City teamed with the Surface Water Improvement and Management Department (SWIM) of the Southwest Florida Water Management District and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to make further improvements by implementing a comprehensive plan to restore natural habitats and improve public access to Osgood Point. This cooperative effort resulted in improved water circulation by creating approximately six acres of wetlands, increased habitat with over 30,000 new native plants and improved public access by providing over 4,000 linear feet of walking trails and boardwalks.
