After the resignation of Mayor William MacNeill, the Gulfport City Council is sporting a new look.
At Tuesday night's council meeting, MacNeill turned over the gavel to the assistant mayor, Councilman Jay Clymer, a few minutes before 8 p.m. and ended a 23-year career in Gulfport politics.
MacNeill, council president as well as mayor, resigned in June to run unsuccessfully for supervisor of elections. The resignation was not supposed to take effect until Jan. 1, but since MacNeill is moving out of Gulfport, he formally gave up his office a few weeks earlier.
Clymer, a nine-year veteran of the council himself, was sworn in as mayor by Acting City Manager Bernice Perry and immediately brought up council reorganization.
First, Councilman William Brokaw moved to elect Clymer as council president. This was approved 3-0, Clymer abstaining. Then he moved to appoint Councilman Yvonne Johnson assistant mayor. This
