A dream suppressed for more than half a century will come to fruition for three Pinellas County women next Friday evening.
In a ceremony at Congregation Beth Sholom synagogue in Gulfport, Sylvia Howard, 62, Fanny Kaplan, 65, and Sherry Smith, "over 70," will become Bas Mitzvah - "Daughters of the Commandments."
"It is something that we always wanted, but weren't able to do when we were young," Mrs. Howard said.
She explained that Bas Mitzvah - the equivalent of Bar Mitzvah for boys - is a relatively new custom in the long history of the Jewish faith.
