DISSTON JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL - ... so old my mother had gone there, now torn down to make a parking lot for school buses, the only part still standing is the old lunch room and the covered walkway down to the bandroom where I started my career on the trombone. That walkway was the place to hang out for a few minutes of freedom between the lunch period and the bell for the afternoon sessions. My buddy tall, slender, very shy Chester comes up with news about a new record by someone named Sam Cooke - YOU SEND ME. Somehow the music was the glue that held it all together. What were you doing when that song was number one? Homeroom with Mr. Pearson, mechanical drawing, all guys. Trying to get a rise out of him by echoing around the room with the call and response from DON'T YA JUST KNOW IT by Huey Smith and the Clowns. A couple of the guys made it to prison before they made it through high school, but most of us seemed to survive.
