"In 1935 a group of ladies decided Gulfport needed a library and found the little real estate office..., abandoned by a former mayor for an unpaid tax bill. They rounded up 1,641 books and by the opening in May, there were 323 members (out of a town population of fewer than 1,000). In 1940 it was traded for the building now standing at 3050 Beach Boulevard, and moved down to the corner of Essex Avenue, where it served commercial purposes for many more years."
