GULFPORT BEACH - It wasn't much of a beach but it was the only one of a kid from that neighborhood could get to on his own. In the summer (a true native would never go in the water after October or before April) we would get together a caravan of bicycles, towels thrown over the handlebars, old inner tubes balanced on the back and head out. In later years the Gulfport Casino began teen dances, taking away the Saturday night business from the old 49th Street Roller Rink. The crazy DJ would play BONGO ROCK seven times in a row, or local bands like the Trutones or Impacs, usually two guys with Fender guitars and a drummer, would play. So I'm standing in the darkened sidelines with my friend Danny and the rest of the guys checking out the girls clustered together across the dance floor and wondering whether I could ask one to dance without making a total fool of myself. And the DJ is announcing "It's the last slow dance of the evening, Santo and Johnny with SLEEPWALK."Language
