GULFPORT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - The first day of the first grade, my mother, this school business being new to her too, forgot to send lunch money with me so I spend my first lunch period sitting there watching everyone else eat. Later we're sitting at our little tables practicing printing our letters and I ask the kid next to me how to spell "love" so I can send a note to the little girl at the next table. Once a month was movie day - 25c and a permission slip from home. In December it was "Miracle on 34th Street". For some reason the second grade teacher wanted us to note whether Santa Claus slept with his whiskers inside or outside of the covers. I thought she was crazy, but it's still one of my favorite holiday films.
