VACANT LOTS AND SECRET SPACES - In the early '50s there were many vacant lots in the neighborhood; not really vacant as far as we kids were concerned. There were scatterings of trees, lots of kid-high underbrush for hiding or planning the quick ambush, secret spots for digging holes or building hideouts that could only be found using maps drawn on school note paper. Most of the boys games seemed to be of war or other conflicts. We played cowboys and indians, WW II - I was always the German army due the legacy of some souvenirs brought back by my uncle Hilton. But the favorite was Yankees and Rebels. The unfortunate kids whose families had moved down from the North were always forced to play the parts of the hated Yankees. All the old places are now filled with houses, parking lots or ugly billboards.
