Description

A metal and enamel ring in the shape of a heart set with rubies and diamonds, surmounted by a crown. Likely American in origin, c. 1780 for the design and the stones. The setting is 19th century. Heart is made of a diamond on the left, ruby on the right. The diamond is surrounded by rubies, the ruby surrounded by diamonds. The crown has three rubies, with diamonds between. One diamond is missing from the crown, a diamond and a ruby from the point at the base. The band has an inpressed design on either side of the setting. The ring was made for Mary Thomson Mason Cooke, daughter of George Mason. Design inspired by a seal ring owned by George Mason II; see "Life and Correspondence of George Mason" by Kate Mason Rowland, vol. 1, pl 26.
