Description

A copy of a Charles Wilson Peale portrait of William Buckland, completed by Mrs. Douglas Gordon. Subject is male, with coiffed grey hair or wig. He wears a brown coat, unbuttoned, with a brown waistcoat and brown paints. The vest is unbuttoned at center and reveals a white shirt underneath. Around his neck is a white cravat. His left arm is draped on his left leg, and he leans his right arm on a green table. In his hand is a pen. The table has writing and architectural tools, as well as architectural plans for Matthias Hammond House in Annapolis, designed by the sitter. In the background of the painting is a column, a green curtain over the sitter's left shoulder, and over the right a classical building. The original painting was completed by Charles Wilson Peale in 1789. Buckland died unexpectedly in 1774, and the painting was not completed until his daughter requested it. The original painting is held by Yale University in the Mabel Brady Garvan Collection. The original painting was loaned to Gunston Hall, 1955. This copy was commissioned in 1960. Mrs. Douglas Gordon of Baltimore was selected as the artist, having already completed a copy for the Hammond-Harwood House in Annapolis. The frame is 18th century. Painting was conserved in 1986-87.
