Cultural/Historical Context

In traditional Chinese painting, animals are few and often just passing through the painting. Not here. And not exactly a hundred, but who’s counting? Li Kemin talks about his accidental technique in this one. Before this painting, he had used only brushes and dark paper to paint. He created this painting with a new technique involving stencils and sponges. Sponge and towel give the ducks a texture that better represents feathers. That technique happened by accident. The artist had put too much paint on the paper and used a towel to remove some of it. This dulled the colors, but in his words, what was left was “wonderful.”
