This painting was created in the year 1999 by artist Yang Zhixian. This painting commemorates the return of Macao in 1999 from Portuguese to Chinese rule. The figures are dancing a bottom drum dance where each dancer hangs a drum around his waist and fastens it behind him. As he kicks the drum, he jumps and turns. During bottom drum dances, the dancers will sometimes wear animal masks. In this painting, the 12 animal signs of the Chinese Zodiac are worn.
The Chinese Zodiac is a 12-year cycle which uses animals to represent each year. Each animal is said to have its own unique characteristics and personality and some believe that people born in the year of the animal will exhibit that animal's traits. For example, the rat is said to be adaptable, the tiger brave, the dragon powerful and the snake wise. The order of these animals is based on a legend about a great race which was held by the Jade Emperor.
Can you find all the animals of the zodiac present in this picture?
