In this painting, overlapping shadowy dark and light horses creates a sense of perspective. This painting was created in the year 1999 by Luo Zhijian. Luo Zhijian was born in the Year of the Horse (a symbol of success) and was inspired by his cousin, who was studying at the Xi’an Fine Arts Academy and would sketch horses for him, to learn how to draw. Since his father could not afford to send him to college, Luo Zhijian taught himself to paint by decorating the objects he was building as a carpenter. According to the artist, this painting represents his own success (something which the Year of the Horse symbolizes) and his hope that people, like these galloping horses, may go forward forever.
In Chinese culture, horses symbolize power, beauty, and freedom and people born in the year of the horse are said to be high spirited, active, and energetic. In addition, horses are legendary for their ability to run long distances, which mark them as a symbol of travel and swift success.
