Compare the realistic expressions and figures of the 1970s style of Huxian painting to the exaggerated smiles emphasizing joy in the 1984 painting Happy and Cheerful Seniors with their new radio representing prosperity. The figures of the white chickens with feathers in the earlier style have by 1984 turned blue, papercut shaped, and printed with textile patterns found in cloth artwork. Chinese art critics call this “transplanting” folk art techniques into their paintings.
