Cultural/Historical Context

Unexpected place for decoration: pigskin. A new landowning policy that granted permission to raise pigs if you owned enough land allowed the neighbor of this artist to begin keeping pigs. The pigs would begin screaming at 4 am every day, when the family would rise to tend them. The family soon grew wealthy, but Gao Yulien says that she was not jealous of their wealth or angry about her sleep being disturbed. The neighbors were hard workers and a good example for everyone. Gao Yulien began her artwork by decorating the newspaper with paper cutouts, then being referred to a seminar. This seminar is where she later began painting.
