Before the Lunar New Year Festival, people buy these intricate paper cuttings. Skilled paper cutters travel to nearby villages selling their works for the festival. The cutters work at the inside tables. The outer tables are full of their delicate paper cuttings for sale. Often this kind of traveling market-stand involves several members of the cutter’s family. Qu Erniu, an experienced paper cutter himself, helps any nearby village market that needs a cutter-just to help out, he says, not for pay. Qu Erniu used paper cutting form for his human figures, so they are shorter than their actual height.
Like men, women also came to painting through paper cutting with the practice of paper cutting influencing repetition in Huxian paintings.
