Along with fullness, another trait of Huxian paintings which has persisted and kept these paintings popular is a striking contrast of single colors: Pictures often contrast strong colors in large areas. According to artist Zhao Huixuan, this creates an impression that is cheerful, optimistic, and prosperous. Strong colors symbolize the strong character of local people.
This painting shows a community coming together to string chiles. The work is typically done by women in the village. They string chiles to hang them in the sun to dry. Chiles were not traditionally grown in large numbers, but as people’s lives improved with the new market economy, the appeal of a cash crop grew.
This painting is done with dark blue underlay, with prominent red and white depicting the working farmers. The colors are harmonious and unified, full of vitality and interest.
