This painting features one mature farmer surrounded by his own tasty harvest. A persimmon tree dominates as this farmer relaxes surrounded by his fruits after a successful year. Because the words for persimmon and everything sound the same in Mandarin, the tree symbolizes this farmer’s satisfaction with everything in his life. Pipe smoking is considered a farmer’s consolation after a hard day at work. But this farmer’s autumn is so satisfying that he has forgotten to light his pipe. Instead, he can sit back with his legs crossed surrounded by the fruits of his labor and listening to a Shaanxi opera on his old-fashioned radio. Life is tasty. Rare to see legs crossed in a Huxian painting where energy and purpose fill the canvas.
