Jesse Ceasar McDade was born in Lagrange, TX on October 22, 1887. He is a Prairie View
College graduate and in 1910 he was a teacher at the Bourne Colored School in Boerne
TX, later moving to teach at the colored high school in Houston. In 1918, he was drafted into the
332nd colored battalion US Army as a 1st Sgt in World War 1 –called for basic training at PVA&M in June 1918. He returned to teaching after the war
– in the early 1920’s at the Gregory School in 4th ward of Houston, TX.
Brother McDade was initiated into ΚΑΨ at Houston Alumni Chapter in 1930. In the 1930’s, he was part of the staff at Phillis Wheatley High School in Houston where he taught physics and chemistry. In 1944, he became principal of Fredrick Douglass Elementary in Houston. He was also a prominent, local public speaker and a founding member and an early board member of the first YMCA for black Houstonians. Brother McDade passed away on
April 30, 1961 and the following year an elementary school was named in his honor in Kashmere Gardens in Houston – dedicated in 1962.Photograph Details
