W.L.D. Johnson, Sr. born on October 7, 1870 in Calvert, TX. According to Grand Historian Kevin Scott - Brother Johnson has the distinction of having the earliest birthdate in Kappa Alpha Psi history.
Brother Johnson was initiated into the Houston Alumni Chapter in 1930. In his early life, he led a drive in 1910 to raise funds to purchase land for Houston’s Colored Carnegie Library. Today, The Johnson Public Library on Reed Rd in Houston is named in his honor. He also served as a past president of the State Teachers' Association, acting dean of Houston College for Negroes, and principal of Blackshear Elementary School from 1918 and continued in that position for more than 31 years. He was a graduate of Prairie View College. He died on April 17, 1971 at the age of 100.
WLD Johnson would serve as Polemarch of HAC from 1942-44 and Southwestern Province from 1944-46 during WW2.
Brother Johnson, in a letter dated May 10,1944 to members of Kappa Alpha Psi stated: "The Grand Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi is straining every nerve to bring back to the Alumni division as many men as possible, since the army is practically breaking up nearly every undergraduate chapter in the college and university." He continued "I have
been assigned to the Southwestern Province to do my utmost to assist in turning the Brothers back to active participation in the fraternity. This is an over size job unless we, in our Province, cooperate closely. My reference is to those who have, for one reason or another, permitted themselves to drop out by becoming unfinancial."Photograph Details
