Description

1st c. Roman child's sarcophagus (a) and top (b). Front striated with small portrait of woman at center, leaves decorate each corner, rope design at each end. Top, repaired, has large hole near center, petals overall. Striated child's sarcophagus with bust of lady in front center. Greek gabled and "tiled" roof and garlands on the ends, pilasters on the corners. (Festschrift Matz, 1962) Dr. Robert Cohon (2022): Child sarcophagus with original matching tile roof; made from marble of Mt. Pentekilos (Greece), possibly from the same marble that built the Pantheon; original striation, headrest, and pilasters, but not original portrait (possibly carved in early 20th century); original tool marks on back of sarcophagus. 2022 scholarship - 1st-3rd century marble sarcophagus, but most likely early 20th century re-carvings 1927 purchased from Angelo Viti 1927 in the courtyard at head of pool 1930s moved to 1st gallery 2024 moved back to courtyard under dining room window
