Description

15th c Byzantine Icon of Christ in Bishop Robes Painted wood; gold background and detail. Painted 1440 Bought by Hammond at auction in Palermo, Sicily, March 23, 1927 "The standard for this depiction is called "Christ the High Priest". It may also be referred to as "Christ the Great Hierarch", or "King of Kings" " On the leaves of the open book held by Christ, two quotes are written: “My kingdom is not of this world; if it were…” (Gospel according to John 18:36) and “Take, eat, this is My Body, which is broken for you for the remission of sins.” (from the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom)." This specific icon originated in the 16th century in Greek Orthodox theology, and was later adopted by post-Byzantine theology. It seems this is much more Greek Orthodox than Byzantine actually.
