Description

15-16th c. black oak German credence/sideboard with double doors carved with hunting scenes: hunter and dog on left, boar and dog on right; drawers and overhang decoratively carved, hidden compartment in top shelf. Double locks. "Acquired by Henry Davis Sleeper (1878-1934) about 1907 and installed in 1908 in Beauport’s Medieval Hall (present-day China Trade Room). Described variously as “a wondrously carved Gothic cabinet, not later than 15th century... from Ravenna, Italy,” and “an Italian dresser of the early Gothic type.” Photographed in situ in Beauport in December 1909 and again by Thomas Marr in 1910. Sold or gifted to JHH Jr in Summer of 1922 when HDS dismantled the Medieval Hall. Photographed in Bungalow by Thomas Marr in 1922 (Negative No. 23100) and referenced there in North Shore Breeze on 20 October 1922.
