Description

Carved wooden Bishop's or choir stall from the Cathedral of la Seu d'Urgell in Catalan, Spain In 3 parts: -seat with simple band inlay which lifts to expose "mercy seat" underneath; (damaged) -the stall itself, which is bordered with carved figures, at its center is thin line running up in the tree of life design, terminating in Gothic arch; -canopy, elaborately carved reaching out at an angle. "Acquired by Leslie Buswell on 13 May 1922 at the Clarke Galleries, NYC, sale of the Raimondo Ruiz Collection of Spanish antiquities. Described as 15th century choir stall. Paid $700. Other big bidder was William Randolf Hearst. Photographed in Bungalow and referenced in North Shore Breeze on 20 October 1922. Later removed to the Castle.
