Description

16th-17thc Pan-European Chair Medieval wooden chairs with carved scroll finials in a Florentine style Originally leather covered seat and back, studded with large metal nails at intervals, leather skirt on front and side. "Acquired by Henry Davis Sleeper (1878-1934) about 1907 and installed in 1908 in Beauport’s Medieval Hall (present-day China Trade Room). Photographed in situ in Beauport in December 1909 and again by Thomas Marr in 1910. Sold or gifted to JHH Jr in Summer of 1922 when HDS dismantled the Medieval Hall. Photographed in Bungalow, c. 1922. Citations: “ ‘The Most Attractive Small House in New England’ on Gloucester Rocks,” Boston Herald Magazine, 26 December 1909: 25; and Bungalow Point Radio Photo Album, 1923-1929, Hammond Papers, HCM. [2025 P Hayden]" 2 originally used in Great Hall at table 1 originally used in Gothic Room at desk 4th not previously cataloged 2009, chairs were reupholstered with maroon velvet and placed in dining room.
