One of two, associated with HM-983 and HM-985.
These items were ceremonial pieces presented to Richard Pindell Hammond, grandfather of John Hays Hammond Jr., upon his ascension to the position of police commissioner of San Francisco in 1890.
note: provenance as told to Raden Sorli Hawk, assistant archivist, by John Leysath, curator. Information apparently came from a very old exhibit or tour booklet (1970s or 80s?), no reason to doubt but currently lacking any associated documentation. - RSH, 4/19/2024
