Description

Italian or French, circa 15th century The 12 paneled door is comprised of a lower access door that was spliced to the rounded top upon which are three carved figures - a cherub, a man and woman in the center panels. The ancient wood is grooved in deep verticals and softened to the tone of dull gray velvet. The door within the door is the one used for regular church services. The small opening shows not only that people were shorter than we are today (as a product of the Little Ice Age which followed the Medieval Warming Period of 900-1,300 CE), but it also served to remind them to be humble, as they bowed to enter the church. The large door would be open on festive occasions. Opposite draw bridge entrance, covering secret panel door to Great Hall 1927-1928 Pacifici purchase
