Description

Icon of Passion of Christ 17th-18th c. Russian Irasslavl School Tempera on wood, 24.5 X 35.5 in Central panel of Christ in mandorla between the blessed and the damned. Border of 20 individual scenes depicting the passion of Christ. The Passion of Christ Icon, devoted to the Feast of Easter, shows in composite form, in the central panel, the death and resurrection of Christ. Along the outer border are episodes of the Passion beginning with the gospel account of the Garden of Gethsemane and ending with the Crucifixion. The inscriptions are written in New Church Slavonic which points to a relatively late date for the icon. [text from 1977 guidebook by N Kline]
