Description

18th c. Byzantine (Russian) Annunciation Tempera on wood panel; in two sections, a - Angel Gabriel with buildings in the background b - Mary with buildings in the background 29 X024.25 in The building pictured behind the Virgin and the angle is most likely Mary’s house, as the scene is frequently portrayed in her home. The artist of this annunciation scene has clearly labeled the subject in the upper left. A later hand has added the name of the archangel Gabriel and of Mary, the “Theotokos” (Birth-Giver of God). This double panel originally surmounted a set of Royal or Holy Doors in the iconostasis of a church. The Royal Doors remain closed during most of the liturgy, and the rite of consecration is performed by the priest in the sanctuary behind the doors.
