Italian Harbor of Ancona Painting (Early copy of 16thc painting in Vatican Museum Hall of Maps - Italian port of Ancona) Italian Harbor scene with boats, breakwater, ocean horizon (left), town, distant hills (center & right) oil on canvas, 55 X 56 in Inscription on lower left: ANCON/ CIVITAS/ DORICA/ CVM PORTV/ TRAIANI. Small inscription on horizon at left of church on a hill: VRBANUS VIII/ PONT. MAX./ DOMVM/ AD EXPVRGANDVM/ MERCES ET ADVENAS/ MORBI SVSPICIONE/ CONSTRVXIT. Small inscription to the right of fortified building on a hill: VRBANVS VIII/ PONT. MAX./ PROPVGNACVLVM/ AD TVTELAM/ ARCISET PORTVS/ TRAIANI. 1928-07-26 letter (see attached) written by the artist Giulio Cesare GIULIANI (Viterbo 1882 – Rome 1954), refers to the map of the port of Ancona and attests that the three maps were executed by his father-in-law, Eugenio Cisterna (Genzano 1862 – 1933), a painter and decorator active throughout Europe, around 1928.
