Description

Russian icon of St Dionysius holding book surrounded by scenes Dionysius was a missionary in Gaul in the 4thc and persecuted by Emperor Valerian Possibly 13th c The central section of the Saint Dionysius Icon is devoted to a standing figure of the saint, known as Saint Denis (d.258?). Although the saint is best known as the patron saint of France, his feast day is also celebrated in the Eastern Church. As the first bishop of Paris, the saint is shown wearing episcopal robes. The decorative inscription is written in Old Church Slavonic, translated as, “Saint Martyr Dionysius, performer of miracles”. The surrounding scenes relate his life. For instance, the upper border shows his baptism and his investment in episcopal robes, while the flanking episodes relate his work and miracles. The lower border depicts his final imprisonment, martyrdom and burial. According to legend, Saint Dionysius was tortured and beheaded after which he walked a considerable distance holding his head in his hands to his final resting place (see lower border of the icon, third scene from left).
