Etching: American soldiers of World War I parading before Palazzo Porto in Piazza Castello in Vicenza, Italy. The building with three monumental columns was an unfinished work by the Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio.
Inscription: "To Jack Hammond. Frdk G Hall"
(Frederick and wife, Evelyn were friends and lived on Eastern Point, across the harbor)
Artist: Frederick Garrison Hall (American, 1879 - 1946).

Note: The little plate "Old House in Vicenza," the gem of the collection, calls for special mention. This work, the most successful among collectors, was awarded the Nathan I. Bijur Prize by the Brooklyn Society of Etchers in 1920." (THE FIFTH ANNUAL EXHIBITION OF THE BROOKLYN SOCIETY OF ETCHERS).
There are depictions of American soldiers and military transport passing along Vicenza's street. Among the Americans who fought on this front was the young Ernest Hemingway. His novel "A Farewell to Arms" takes place in a hospital 20 miles from Vicenza.
