Description

Processional Cross - Crucifix; Christ figure painted with Evangelists representations in low relief at 4 corners; back of entire piece etched with angels, flowers and Resurrection figure. Gilded metal. Gilt enamel polychrome over bronze Reportedly 13thc Spanish, but possibly 15thc Flemish CHAMPLEVE FIGURE OF CHRIST This small copper figure of Christ attached to a crucifix. The torso shows signs of its original gilding which was painted over at a later date. The figure is representative of champlevé enameling, a technique used in the Limousin area of France during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The champlevé technique consists of carving out small areas in the copper form which are then filled with powdered glass and fused to a translucent enamel. In this case, the enamel creates the separately colored areas of the drapery. [text from 1977 guidebook by N Kline] Originally on multi-legged iron floor stand 2023 Jesus reattached to cross
