Description

Italian silver processional cross/crucifix fashioned from silver strips attached to wooden core; Front: figure of Christ in cast silver; hair, beard and tunic gilded. Four circular medallions (roundels) on each end, each in repoussé. Top: personifications of Sun and Moon. Left: Mary. Right: John the Baptist. Bottom: Adam arising from casket. Circular section of filigree work surrounds each medallion. Stones around medallions on front face only; several missing. Additional filigree decorative panels on ends. Possible dates of composite pieces- Roundels and Shafts: 12th century Christ Figure: 15th century Filigree Ornamentation: 19th century (See catalogue card for more.) Formerly part of Brummer collection, acquired ca 1951 by Hammond Went through conservation/restoration by Fogg Museum in 1980
