Description

Italian 17th c Monstrance, patterned after famous earlier pieces; Rosette-shaped with clear glass inserts on front. Glass incised and gilded with central figure of seated Christ on back. "A monstrance is a receptacle in which the Host is held. This monstrance is closely patterned upon an early thirteenth reliquary formerly found in the Spitzer Collection, which in turn, was based upon the eleventh century paten (a plate used to hold the Host) once belonging to Bishop Bernward of Hildesheim.* Figures 46 a and 46 b. The practice of copying and incorporating elements from highly venerated prototypes was common in the medieval period and indicates the reverence with which liturgical objects were treated. Surrounded by delicate filigree and semi-precious stones, the glass enclosure protects and exhibits the Host. On the glass, the incised and gilded figure of Christ is shown enthroned and flanked by two candles in the manner of the Spitzer reliquary. In his left hand, he holds an orb surmounted by a cross and raises the other hand in benediction. He is surrounded by demi-circles depicting the Virgin and Saints." [text from guidebook by N Kline 1977] Inscription surrounding Christ: DOMINI + DE: IGNO X in Majesty with 2 candlesticks Semi-circular borders include 6 figures of individual saints of the Virgin Mary, St. Peter, St. Stephen, St. James, St. Philip, and St. Bartholomew. with inscriptions: DE .
