Description

Pewter Charger, medium-sized, lip with three distinct bandings. On rim, four hallmarks in a row, one obscured. Markings: C I A (see catalogue card) English, circa 18th century This charger has a multiple-reeded rim, and the hallmarks “H.M.”, a crowned leopard’s face and cinquefoil, all of which identify the creator of the piece as Hugh Masham of London, whose working dates are 1709-1713. The owners’ initials are engraved on the rim. Like a modern monogram, the left initial is for the husband’s name, the middle initial is the couple’s last name, and the right one stands for the wife’s name.
