Description

1 of pair of carved wooden plaques. 16th c. French .2 - Two robed angels holding a shield that is decorated with a coat-of-arms. The depiction of the angels brings a religious element to the sculptures. Taken together, they may indicate the knight's ' faithfulness and servitude to God. In Christian interpretation, the dog is a symbol of "watchfulness and fidelity. The shield the angels hold, in conjunction with the knight and dog, bring together the elements of faith, chivalry, and the battle between good and evil. Possibly added after Hammond post 1965
